My family can definitely relate. Yet when it came to fostering a pregnant rescue dog, Harley—a sweet four-year-old poodle who arrived just days away from giving birth—those worries turned into one of the most meaningful and rewarding things we’ve done together.
I was at the rescue office when Harley walked through the door. She had just returned from a wellness visit, and that’s when we got the surprise news—Harley was pregnant and expected to deliver within the next few days. The minute I met her, I fell in love with her gentle, affectionate personality and knew we wanted to help.
We brought Harley home, set up a whelping area, and started learning everything we could about canine pregnancy, dog labor, and caring for newborn puppies. Thankfully, we had plenty of support. The Birth Day
About a week later, Harley went into labor.
My husband came home from work to find that the first puppy had already arrived. Together, we helped Harley through the rest of the delivery. Although two of the puppies were stillborn, Harley welcomed eight healthy, thriving babies.
Watching her with those puppies was incredible. She seemed to know exactly what they needed and cared for them with so much patience. It was hard not to be amazed by her.
Caring for Newborn Puppies in Foster Care
The first few days turned into a blur of puppy snuggles, laundry, weight checks, and making sure everyone stayed warm and healthy. Like any new experience, there were moments when we felt overwhelmed—but we never felt alone. Thanks to the support of our foster representatives, we always had someone to call when we had questions.
One week later, all eight puppies were happily wriggling, nursing, gaining weight, and turning into healthy little “chunky monkeys.” Harley was doing great too, taking excellent care of her babies while still making time for cuddles and outdoor breaks.

Our son, Soren, quickly became part of Harley’s team. He helps fill water bowls and loves quietly sitting with the puppies, learning that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a difference. His confidence grows day by day, and it’s easy to hear his pride and excitement when he talks about “Harley’s puppies” and each new milestone they reach.
More than anything, Soren is seeing firsthand how much loving care can make a difference. He’s watched Harley go from needing a safe place to have her puppies to becoming a happy mom raising a healthy litter. He knows what it looks like when people open their homes to animals who need a chance.
With newborn puppies in the house, there were constant little moments to pause, check in, and talk things through. It opened the door to so many conversations about life, growth, responsibility, and kindness—questions we never expected, and reflections that felt far beyond his years. It became one of those quiet gifts of fostering we didn’t plan for, but are so grateful to have had.
